Best Cannabis Strains for Sleep
Indica-leaning, myrcene-rich strains and the dosing tactics that turn a session into a full night's rest.
Why cannabis works for sleep — and when it doesn't
Cannabis can shorten sleep latency (how long it takes to fall asleep) and deepen the early stages of sleep. The catch: high doses of THC can suppress REM, and daily heavy use builds tolerance fast. The goal is the smallest effective dose of the right chemistry, not the strongest thing on the shelf.
Chemistry that promotes sleep
Look for:
- Myrcene-dominant strains (earthy, mango). The most reliably sedating terpene in cannabis.
- Linalool (lavender) for nervous-system slowdown.
- Terpinolene and caryophyllene as supporting players.
- THC 15–20% is plenty. Above that, anxiety risk climbs without much sleep benefit.
- A touch of CBN (the degradation product of THC) in aged flower or specialty edibles — widely marketed for sleep and gentler than pure THC.
Strains worth asking for
- Granddaddy Purple — myrcene + linalool, classic nightcap.
- Northern Lights — old-school indica, body-heavy and quiet.
- Bubba Kush — caryophyllene-forward, grounding.
- Tahoe OG — fast onset, full-body relaxation.
- 9 Pound Hammer — myrcene-heavy, sedating quickly.
- Purple Punch — sweet, dessert-like, reliable sleep finisher.
How to dose for sleep, not for grogginess
- Inhaled: 1–2 small hits 30–45 minutes before bed.
- Edibles: 2.5–5 mg THC (or 1:1 THC:CBN) taken 60–90 minutes before bed.
- Avoid stacking with alcohol — it wrecks sleep architecture even when you fall asleep faster.
- Take 1–2 cannabis-free nights per week to keep tolerance and REM rebound in check.
When to skip cannabis and see a clinician
Chronic insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless legs aren't fixed by flower. If you need cannabis nightly to sleep more than a month, talk to a doctor — it may be masking something that needs proper care.
