THC vs CBD: a clear breakdown
How the two headline cannabinoids work — separately, together, and which ratio fits which goal.
Same plant, opposite jobs
THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) are both cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant. They're chemically similar but functionally very different. THC binds directly to CB1 receptors in your brain, producing the intoxicating 'high.' CBD interacts more subtly with the endocannabinoid system — modulating, not activating, and producing no intoxication.
What THC does
Euphoria, altered perception of time and sensation, appetite stimulation, drowsiness or alertness depending on dose and terpene profile, pain relief, and — at higher doses or in sensitive individuals — anxiety, paranoia, and short-term memory disruption. Effects begin within minutes (inhaled) or 30–120 minutes (oral) and last 2–6 hours.
What CBD does
Anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-seizure (it's FDA-approved as Epidiolex for specific epilepsies), and a general 'smoothing' of the THC experience. CBD doesn't get you high but can produce a subtle physical relaxation. Onset is slower and effects are gentler than THC.
Reading ratios
Cannabis products are increasingly labeled by THC:CBD ratio. Some useful starting points:
• 20:1 CBD:THC — wellness, daytime, essentially non-intoxicating • 2:1 CBD:THC — mild high, strong therapeutic feel, great for anxiety-prone consumers • 1:1 — balanced, gentler than pure THC, good for pain • 1:0 (THC only) — full intoxication, recreational
Together is better
CBD blunts THC's sharpest edges. Clinical work suggests CBD reduces THC-induced anxiety and paranoia and shortens hangover. If pure THC has ever made you uncomfortable, a 1:1 or 2:1 product is often a revelation. This is one of the strongest examples of the entourage effect in action.
