Best Grinders and Crushers: What the Specs Actually Mean

Two-piece, four-piece, or a crusher

Two-piece. Grinds and holds. Simple, compact, nothing to lose. No kief collection.

Four-piece. Grinds into a chamber, with a mesh screen dropping kief into a base compartment. Larger, more to clean, but the kief adds up.

Crusher with storage. Grinds and stores in one sealed body, usually with a screw-down smell-proof lid. This is the format that makes sense if you carry things with you — one item instead of a grinder plus a container.

The specs that matter

Tooth shape, not tooth count. Diamond-cut teeth shear the material; flat pegs crush it. Shearing preserves trichomes, crushing destroys them. A 30-tooth diamond grinder beats a 50-peg one.

Thread quality. The single biggest difference between a £10 grinder and a £40 one. Cheap threads bind, cross-thread and eventually seize with resin. Well-machined threads keep turning smoothly for years.

Magnet strength. A weak lid magnet pops off in a bag and empties itself. This is a genuine reason to avoid the cheapest options.

Material. Anodised aluminium is the standard and is fine. Avoid unfinished cast metal — it sheds particles into the material. Acrylic teeth snap; do not bother.

Screen mesh. For kief collection, 100 to 150 micron is the useful range. Finer screens clog, coarser screens let plant matter through.

What does not matter

• "Aerospace grade" anything — it is aluminium
• Clear windows, which scratch and cloud within weeks

Cleaning

Freeze for 30 minutes, then tap firmly — frozen resin flakes off. For a deep clean, soak aluminium parts in isopropyl alcohol for 20 minutes, brush and dry completely before reassembling. Never soak the mesh screen; brush it with a dry toothbrush instead.
